Examiner / EPA 608

COMING JANUARY 2027

Ready for the new 608 exam.

EPA is replacing the Section 608 question bank for the first time in about 30 years, starting January 1, 2027. Examiner is built for the new exam, including A2L refrigerants like R-32 and R-454B, with every answer cited to the regulation.

Who it's for

HVAC and refrigeration technicians, apprentices and trade-school students who need Section 608 certification to buy refrigerant and work on equipment, plus experienced techs who want to understand the new refrigerants.

The exam, section by section

SectionCoversTo pass
CoreRegulations, environmental impact, safety, recovery basics18 of 25
Type ISmall appliances (5 lb or less of refrigerant)18 of 25
Type IIHigh-pressure and very-high-pressure appliances18 of 25
Type IIILow-pressure appliances18 of 25
UniversalCore plus Types I, II and IIIEach section separately

Each section is scored on its own, so you can pass Core and Type II and retake only what you missed. Examiner scores sections separately too.

Every answer shows its source.

After you answer, Examiner explains each choice and shows the exact passage the right answer comes from, so you learn the rule, not the question.

Sample question

While recovering refrigerant, a small amount escapes despite proper procedure. Under the Section 608 rules, this release is:

AA violation, because any release of refrigerant is prohibited
BNot subject to the venting prohibition, because it is a de minimis release during a good-faith recovery attemptCorrect
CAllowed only if the appliance holds less than 5 pounds
DAllowed only if reported to EPA within 30 days

The rule bans knowingly venting refrigerant, but small releases that happen during a good-faith attempt to recover or recycle are exempt.

40 CFR 82.154(a)
No person maintaining, servicing, repairing, or disposing of an appliance or industrial process refrigeration may knowingly vent or otherwise release into the environment any refrigerant from such appliances. … De minimis releases associated with good faith attempts to recycle or recover refrigerants are not subject to this prohibition.
